Shopify Plus starts around $2,300 per month on a multi-year term, against $399 for Advanced, per Shopify's published 2026 pricing. The upgrade pays when checkout customization, B2B selling, multi-store expansion, or negotiated rates return more than the roughly $1,900 monthly difference, which typically starts becoming true in the low seven figures of annual revenue.
"Should we go Plus?" is one of the most common questions we get from scaling brands, and it is usually asked for the wrong reason: prestige, or the vague sense that serious brands are on Plus. Plus is a set of specific capabilities with a specific price. This guide lists what you actually get, the math for when it pays, and the cases where staying on Advanced is simply the correct answer.
The Quick Answer
Upgrade to Plus when at least one of these is concretely true: you need checkout extensibility (custom fields, logic, and UI in checkout), you are building a real B2B or wholesale channel, you need multiple expansion stores for markets or brands, or your volume makes negotiated payment rates and dedicated support worth real money. If none of those is true yet, Advanced at $399 runs the same core commerce engine, and the $1,900 monthly difference belongs in ads, conversion work, or inventory.
2026 Plan Lineup and Pricing
Shopify's published 2026 lineup, monthly on annual or term billing:
| Plan | Price | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $5 | Selling via links and social, no full store |
| Basic | $39 | New and small stores |
| Grow | $105 | Growing teams, better reporting |
| Advanced | $399 | Scaling brands; the real Plus alternative |
| Plus | from ~$2,300 (multi-year term) | High-volume, B2B, multi-store, checkout customization |
Two notes on the Plus number: it is a from-price on a term commitment (variable-fee arrangements exist at very high volume), and card rates on every plan are a separate, real cost line, with Plus opening the door to negotiated processing at volume. The subscription is the visible cost; processing is usually the bigger one.
What Plus Actually Adds
The honest capability list, in order of how often it actually justifies the upgrade in our client work:
1. Checkout extensibility
Custom fields, custom logic, and UI extensions inside checkout itself. On standard plans you control everything around checkout (wallets, cart, shipping settings, branding basics), which covers most conversion work, as we detailed in the checkout guide. Plus is where checkout itself becomes programmable: custom upsell logic, field-level validation, gifting flows, and rule-driven content at the highest-intent step of the store.
2. The B2B suite
Company accounts, price lists, payment terms, and quantity rules, natively. If wholesale is a real channel rather than an occasional email thread, this alone can carry the upgrade, because the app-and-workaround alternative on standard plans gets expensive and fragile at exactly the moment B2B gets serious.
3. Expansion stores
Additional stores under one Plus agreement for international markets or sister brands, where Markets on a single store stops being enough (separate catalogs, languages, or operations).
4. Automation and scale tooling
Launchpad for scheduled events and drops, deeper customization through Shopify Functions, higher API throughput for heavy integrations, and priority support with a dedicated point of contact. Individually small, collectively the difference between operating at volume and improvising at volume.
5. Negotiated economics
Payment processing and related terms become a conversation at Plus volume. The delta is deal-specific, which is exactly why it belongs in a spreadsheet before it belongs in a decision.
What Plus Does Not Fix
Worth saying plainly, because upgrade conversations often smuggle in hope: Plus does not fix a 0.8% conversion rate, slow pages, weak product pages, or an unprofitable ad account. It is infrastructure, not performance. A store converting below the 1.4% Shopify median has cheaper problems to solve first, and $1,900 a month funds a lot of conversion work. We have talked more than one brand out of Plus and into a fix list, and their revenue thanked them for it.
The Upgrade Math

The decision is a one-line spreadsheet: does Plus return more than ~$1,900 per month? Three levers, with illustrative numbers you should replace with your own:
- Checkout conversion. A store doing $150,000 per month that gains a 5% relative conversion lift from checkout customization adds $7,500 in monthly revenue, several times the delta. At $30,000 per month, the same relative lift is $1,500 and does not clear the bar. Checkout leverage scales with volume; that is the entire pattern.
- Processing economics. Small rate improvements on large volume compound: even modest negotiated savings on $300,000 of monthly processing are hundreds of dollars a month, before the conversation gets serious at higher volume. Deal-specific, so model it with real quotes, not folklore.
- B2B revenue enabled. If Plus's B2B suite unlocks or professionalizes a wholesale channel, count the channel's margin, not its revenue, against the delta.
This is why the commonly cited consideration zone sits around $1 to $2 million in annual revenue: below it, the levers rarely produce $1,900 a month; above it, one lever alone often does. Treat the zone as a prompt to run your numbers, not as a rule.
Who Should Stay on Standard Plans
- Brands whose growth constraint is traffic, conversion, or product, not infrastructure. Which is most brands under seven figures.
- Stores wanting checkout "customization" that is actually wallet placement, trust signals, and expectation-setting, all available on any plan.
- Anyone considering Plus for a badge. Customers cannot see your plan; they can see your load time.
How the Upgrade Works (Not a Migration)
Good news for anyone scarred by replatforming: moving to Plus is a plan change on the same store, not a migration. Your theme, apps, URLs, and data stay put. The real project is capturing the value after the switch: checkout extensibility work, B2B configuration, expansion store setup, and integration upgrades are where the Plus fee starts earning, and they deserve a planned build, not a hopeful toggle.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Shopify Plus cost in 2026?
Plus starts around $2,300 per month on a multi-year term, per Shopify's published pricing, with variable-fee arrangements at very high volume. Compare it against Advanced at $399, making the working delta roughly $1,900 per month, and remember payment processing is a separate cost line on every plan.
At what revenue should I upgrade to Shopify Plus?
The commonly cited consideration zone is around $1 to $2 million annually, but the honest trigger is a lever, not a number: checkout extensibility, a real B2B channel, expansion stores, or negotiated economics returning more than the monthly delta. One concrete lever beats any revenue rule of thumb.
Is Shopify Plus worth it for a small store?
Almost never. Below the consideration zone, Plus's advantages either do not apply or return less than they cost, and the monthly delta funds conversion work, creative, or inventory that moves revenue directly. Plus is infrastructure for problems of scale; acquire the problems first.
Can I customize checkout without Shopify Plus?
You control what matters most on any plan: express wallet placement, cart experience, shipping settings, guest checkout, and branding basics, which cover the majority of checkout conversion work. Checkout extensibility, meaning custom fields, logic, and UI inside checkout itself, is the Plus-level capability.
Is upgrading to Plus a migration?
No. It is a plan change on your existing store: theme, apps, URLs, and data all remain. The project worth planning is what comes after, since checkout extensibility, B2B setup, and expansion stores are builds that capture the value the higher fee is buying.
