Shopify Checkout Optimization: Completion Benchmarks and the Fix List

Shopify checkout completion rate benchmarks 2026

By Ritik Verma, Founder, 7SEA Marketing™ · Last updated: September 2026

7SEA Marketing™ is a Google Partner and Shopify Partner agency with offices in Los Angeles and New Delhi. Since 2020 we have shipped 700+ Shopify stores, and the checkout is where we look first when a store's revenue and its traffic disagree.

The average Shopify store completes only 45% of the checkouts that begin; the top 20% of stores reach 59%, and the top 10% reach 66%, per Littledata's benchmarks. Every point between your number and those tiers is revenue from visitors who already decided to buy, which makes checkout the highest-intent surface you can optimize.

That is what separates checkout work from every other conversion project. Upper-funnel optimization persuades the undecided. Checkout optimization stops losing the decided. A visitor who reached your checkout added a product, saw your prices, and clicked forward; roughly half of them then leave, and the reasons are documented, ranked, and mostly fixable. This guide covers the benchmarks, the reasons, and the fixes in the order they pay.

The Benchmarks

Checkout metric Average Top 20% Top 10% Source
Checkout completion 45% 59%+ 66%+ Littledata (Shopify)
Cart abandonment 70.22% Baymard Institute
Cart abandonment (cross-brand) 77.81% Dynamic Yield

By device, Carty Labs' 2026 Shopify data puts desktop checkout completion at 48 to 58% and mobile at 35 to 45%, with tablet between. The mobile gap is structural (typing on phones is friction) but has narrowed sharply since the early 2020s, and the narrowing has one main cause: accelerated wallets. That cause is also fix number one below.

One framing note: cart abandonment near 70% is normal, not an emergency, because much of it is research behavior. Checkout abandonment is different. Someone who starts checkout is not researching; the ~55% who fail to finish at an average store are lost to friction, surprise, and doubt, and those three are yours to remove.

How to Measure Yours (Separately)

Checkout completion = orders ÷ checkouts started, and Shopify's analytics reports both stages. Measure it separately from your site-wide conversion rate, always: a 2% store could hide a 60% checkout with a weak upper funnel, or a 30% checkout behind a strong one, and the two diagnoses have opposite fix lists. Full funnel-stage context lives in our conversion benchmarks guide.

Two measurement cautions: use a window with at least a few hundred checkout starts before trusting the ratio, and verify your purchase tracking first, because accelerated checkouts are exactly where browser-based tracking drops events. A "checkout problem" that is really a tracking problem wastes a quarter of optimization on a measurement bug.

Why Decided Buyers Still Leave

Top reasons customers abandon checkout, ranked

Baymard Institute's long-running abandonment research keeps returning the same ranked reasons, and they map cleanly to fixes:

  1. Unexpected extra costs. Shipping, taxes, and fees revealed late. The perennial number one, and the most preventable.
  2. Forced account creation. A registration wall between a buyer and their purchase.
  3. Slow or unclear delivery. No date shown, or a date too far away, discovered at the last step.
  4. Too long or complicated a process. Every field is a toll booth; every extra step is an exit.
  5. Trust doubt at the payment moment. The instant of entering card details is where credibility is re-evaluated.
  6. No visible total until late. Buyers who cannot see the full number keep a thumb on the exit.
  7. Errors and technical friction. Failed validations, lost form data, broken discount codes.

Notice what is absent: price itself barely features. By checkout, the price was accepted. What kills the sale is the delta between what was expected and what the checkout reveals.

The Fix List

In the order we apply them:

  1. Express wallets first, everywhere. Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay surfaced on the product page and cart, not discovered at checkout. Wallets collapse the typing that drives the mobile completion gap, and they are the single highest-leverage checkout fix on most stores.
  2. Kill cost surprise upstream. Shipping cost or free-shipping threshold announced sitewide, estimated taxes and delivery visible in the cart, order total always on screen inside checkout. The number one abandonment reason dies of exposure.
  3. Guest checkout as the default. Account creation offered after purchase, when it costs the sale nothing. Shopify supports this pattern natively; use it.
  4. Show the delivery date, not just the method. "Arrives Thu, Oct 1" converts; "Standard shipping (5-9 business days)" invites a second-guess.
  5. Cut every optional field. Company name, address line two where unneeded. Enable address autocomplete, and make sure mobile inputs trigger the right keyboards (numeric for phone and card).
  6. Reassure at the payment step. Recognized payment logos, a returns line, and support availability visible at the moment of card entry. Trust signals belong where doubt happens, not only in the footer.
  7. Handle errors kindly. Inline validation that says what is wrong and keeps everything already typed. A checkout that wipes a mobile form on error is a checkout that ends sessions.
  8. Localize for your markets. Currency, address formats, and the payment methods your international buyers actually use. A checkout that feels foreign completes like one.
  9. Remove the exits. Checkout is not the place for navigation menus, promo banners, or a last-second upsell carousel. One job, one path. (AOV work belongs before checkout and after purchase, per our 21-fix CRO guide.)
  10. Honest urgency only. Real stock and real deadlines if any; fake timers cost trust at the exact moment trust is being audited, and create Merchant Center policy risk besides.

Shopify-Specific Notes: Plans and Customization

Shopify's checkout is deliberately standardized, which is mostly a gift: it is fast, secure, wallet-integrated, and battle-tested at a scale no custom checkout matches. How much you can change depends on plan. Every store controls the inputs around checkout (wallet placement, cart design, shipping settings, branding basics), while deeper customization through checkout extensibility (custom fields, logic, and UI extensions) belongs to Shopify Plus. Practical translation: the fix list above is almost entirely available on standard plans, because most checkout losses happen in the expectations set before checkout and the friction inside standard controls, not in exotic customization. Treat Plus-level checkout work as a scaling decision, not a prerequisite.

Recovering the Ones Who Leave Anyway

Even a top-decile checkout loses a third of starters, so recovery is part of the system: an abandonment email within the hour while intent is warm, a second touch the next day, and SMS where you hold consent. Say something useful (answer the likely objection, confirm the delivery date, offer help) rather than only "you left something behind." Shopify's abandoned checkout data plus your email platform covers this natively; the sophistication that matters is timing and message, not tooling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good checkout completion rate on Shopify?

The average Shopify store completes 45% of started checkouts; the top 20% reach 59% and the top 10% reach 66%, per Littledata. Measure it as orders divided by checkouts started, separately from your site-wide conversion rate, because the two numbers diagnose different problems.

Why do customers abandon at checkout?

Baymard's research ranks the reasons consistently: unexpected extra costs first, then forced account creation, slow or unclear delivery, overlong forms, trust doubt at the payment step, and hidden totals. Price itself rarely features; by checkout the price was accepted, and surprises are what kill the sale.

Does Shop Pay actually increase conversion?

Accelerated wallets are the main reason the mobile checkout gap narrowed from roughly threefold to under twofold, because they remove the typing that makes phone checkouts fail. Surfacing Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Google Pay early is the single highest-leverage checkout fix on most Shopify stores.

Can I customize Shopify checkout without Plus?

You control what matters most on any plan: wallet placement, cart experience, shipping settings, guest checkout, branding basics, and everything that sets expectations before checkout. Deeper customization through checkout extensibility (custom fields, logic, UI extensions) is a Shopify Plus capability, and for most stores it is a scaling decision rather than a prerequisite.

How do I recover abandoned checkouts?

Send the first recovery email within the hour, a second the next day, and SMS where you have consent, with messages that answer objections (delivery date, returns, support) rather than just nudging. Recovery supplements a fixed checkout; it cannot compensate for cost surprises and friction that keep re-creating abandoners.
