Shopify Maintenance & Support Retainers: What's Included and What It Costs (2026)

Shopify maintenance and support retainer tiers with typical monthly cost and hours

Updated: 6 November 2026 · Ritik Verma, Founder, 7SEA Marketing

A Shopify maintenance retainer typically costs $500–$2,500 a month for small and mid-size stores, and $2,500–$6,000+ for larger or Shopify Plus stores. It buys a fixed block of developer time each month for fixes, theme changes, app and tracking checks, speed work and small improvements, not unlimited development. What decides its value isn't the price, it's the hours, the response time and what happens when you go over.

Shopify handles hosting, security and platform updates. A retainer covers everything Shopify doesn't: your theme, your apps, your tracking, your integrations, and the steady stream of small changes a growing store needs.

What a retainer typically includes

Included Usually not included
Bug fixes and broken-layout fixes New features or major builds
Theme edits and new sections Full redesigns
App updates, conflicts and removals Custom app development
Tracking checks (GA4, Google Ads, Meta) Paid ads management
Page-speed monitoring and fixes Content writing and photography
Checkout and payment checks Strategy work, unless stated
Small CRO tests and tweaks Large migrations
Pre-sale / BFCM readiness checks Unlimited "on call" support

A retainer is planned capacity, not a promise to do anything you ask. The best ones are clear about where "maintenance" ends and "project" begins, and quote projects separately.

What a Shopify maintenance retainer covers and what falls outside scope

What it costs (market ranges)

Tier Typical monthly cost Typical hours Typical response time Fits
Essential $500 – $1,000 5 – 10 hrs 1 – 2 business days Small stores, few changes
Growth $1,000 – $2,500 10 – 25 hrs Same / next business day Growing stores, regular updates
Scale / Plus $2,500 – $6,000+ 25 – 60 hrs Hours for critical issues High-revenue or Shopify Plus stores

Market ranges from US agency and vendor sources, 2026.

What moves the price:

  • Who does the work. US agencies typically bill $100–$200/hr; offshore agencies are often 40–60% less for comparable work.
  • Store complexity. Stores running 20+ apps typically cost more to maintain: every app is a potential conflict.
  • Response-time promises. A 2-hour critical-issue SLA costs more than "next business day".
  • Minimum term. Many retainers require 3–6 months; month-to-month usually costs more per hour.

The three pricing models

Model How it works Good for Watch out for
Monthly hours block Fixed fee for X hours Predictable needs Unused hours expiring
Flat-fee plan Fixed fee for a defined scope Stores that want no surprises Scope creep disputes
Pay-per-ticket / on demand Pay per task or per hour Rare, irregular needs No priority; higher hourly rate

Most stores with steady change requests do best on an hours block with clear rollover rules. Stores that need help twice a year are usually better off without a retainer.

The 8 terms to check before you sign

  • Hours and rollover: do unused hours roll over, and for how long?
  • Response vs resolution time: "we respond in 4 hours" isn't "we fix it in 4 hours".
  • Critical-issue definition: what counts as an emergency (checkout down, site down, payments failing)?
  • Overage rate: the hourly rate when you exceed your block.
  • Who does the work: named developers or a rotating pool?
  • Reporting: what was done, hours used, what's next.
  • Minimum term and notice period.
  • Access and ownership: the store, theme code and apps stay in your accounts.
Checklist of clauses to look for in a Shopify maintenance retainer contract

The most-overlooked line is the overage rate. A cheap retainer with an expensive overage rate is the most expensive option for any store that's actually growing.

Do you actually need one?

You probably need a retainer if:

  • You request changes every month (new sections, campaign pages, app swaps).
  • Revenue depends on the store being up: every hour of a broken checkout costs real money.
  • You run paid ads and need tracking verified continuously.
  • You don't have a developer in-house.

You probably don't if:

  • Your store changes a few times a year.
  • You're comfortable in the theme editor and use few apps.
  • You have an in-house developer.

For many small stores, a quarterly health check (tracking, speed, apps, checkout) plus project-based work when needed is better value than a monthly retainer.

What a good month on a retainer looks like

Week Typical work
1 Health check: tracking, speed, checkout, app updates
2 Requested changes: new sections, campaign landing page
3 One CRO improvement or test
4 Report: hours used, what changed, issues found, next month's plan

If your current retainer can't show you a month like this (what was done, and what it achieved), that's the conversation to have before renewing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Shopify maintenance cost per month?

Market ranges in 2026: roughly $500–$1,000 a month for an essential plan with 5–10 hours, $1,000–$2,500 for 10–25 hours, and $2,500–$6,000+ for larger or Shopify Plus stores. Who does the work, store complexity, response-time promises and minimum terms drive the price.

What does a Shopify maintenance retainer include?

Typically bug fixes, theme edits, app updates and conflicts, tracking checks, page-speed fixes, checkout checks and small CRO improvements, within a fixed number of hours. New features, full redesigns, custom apps and ads management are usually quoted separately.

Doesn't Shopify maintain my store already?

Shopify maintains the platform: hosting, security, checkout infrastructure and core updates. It doesn't maintain your theme, apps, tracking or integrations. Those are what break when apps update, themes age or campaigns change, and that's what a retainer covers.

Is a monthly retainer better than paying hourly?

For stores with regular monthly changes, usually yes: retainer hours are typically cheaper than ad-hoc hours and come with priority. For stores that need help only a few times a year, paying per project or per ticket is usually better value.

What should a Shopify support SLA include?

A clear definition of critical issues, response and resolution times for each severity level, an overage rate, reporting, and who does the work. Check that "response time" isn't being sold as "resolution time".

Do unused retainer hours roll over?

It depends on the contract. Some agencies roll over unused hours for one or two months; many don't. Ask before signing: expiring hours make a retainer more expensive than it looks.

How do I know if my Shopify retainer is worth it?

You should get a monthly report showing hours used, what was done, issues found and what's next, and the work should tie to outcomes such as fewer errors, faster pages or better conversion. If you can't see what you're paying for, renegotiate or switch.
