Shopify International SEO: Markets, Subfolders and Hreflang (2026)

Shopify international SEO setup with Markets, subfolders and hreflang

Last updated: September 25, 2026

Shopify Markets handles most of the plumbing for international SEO. You can serve each country or language from a subfolder like /en-gb/ or /de/, a subdomain, or its own domain, and Shopify adds hreflang tags for the market and language versions you set up. What breaks international rankings is rarely the plumbing. It is forced IP redirects that stop Google from seeing other versions, same-language markets with nothing localized, half-translated pages, and domains set up outside Markets where no hreflang is generated at all.

This guide covers the structural choice, how hreflang works on Shopify, and the mistakes we see most often on stores selling across the US, UK, EU, India and Australia.

Subfolders, subdomains or separate domains?

Subfolder, subdomain and country domain structures compared for Shopify international SEO
Structure Example Strengths Weaknesses
Subfolders store.com/en-gb/ All versions share one domain's authority, simplest to run Weaker local signal than a country domain
Subdomains uk.store.com Clear separation Authority partly split, little upside over subfolders
Country domains store.co.uk, store.de Strongest local trust signal Each domain builds authority separately, more work and cost

For most Shopify brands, subfolders are the right default. They let a new market benefit from the authority your main domain already has. Country domains make sense when you already own them with history, or when local trust strongly depends on a local domain, which is more common in some European markets than in others.

How does Shopify handle hreflang?

Hreflang tags tell search engines which version of a page is meant for which language and region, so a UK shopper sees GBP prices and a US shopper sees USD prices. When you assign subfolders or domains to markets and languages in Shopify Markets, Shopify outputs hreflang alternate links for those versions automatically, including an x-default version.

How to check yours: open any product page, view the page source, and search for hreflang. You should see one line per market and language version, each pointing to the equivalent page, plus x-default. Check a product, a collection and the homepage.

Two situations produce no hreflang, or wrong hreflang:

Separate stores. If your UK site is a completely separate Shopify store rather than a market inside one store, Shopify does not know the two are related. You have to add hreflang yourself, usually with an app or custom code, and keep both catalogs mapped.

Theme-injected tags. Some older themes or apps add their own hreflang lines. Duplicated or conflicting tags confuse more than they help. Keep one source, and let Markets generate it.

What about markets that share a language?

This is the most common international setup for English-language brands: US, UK, Australia and Canada, all in English. Hreflang separates them with codes like en-us, en-gb and en-au, so near-identical content is not treated as a duplicate problem. But hreflang only works well when the versions are genuinely localized:

Currency and prices in the local currency. Spelling and vocabulary (color and colour, sneakers and trainers, pants and trousers) in titles and key copy. Shipping, duties and returns information for that country. Sizing where it differs, such as UK and US clothing and shoe sizes.

The same applies to German across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. A market that only changes the currency symbol gives Google little reason to rank it separately. Prioritize localizing the pages that carry the most traffic: collections, top products and the homepage.

Should I automatically redirect visitors by country?

Why forced IP redirects stop Googlebot from crawling other market versions of a store

Be careful. Forced redirects based on IP address can stop Google from ever seeing some versions of your store, because Googlebot mostly crawls from the US. If every US-based request is redirected to the US version, your UK and Australian pages can go uncrawled.

The safer pattern is a suggestion banner or country selector that offers the local version without forcing it. If you do use automatic redirection, test it: in Search Console, inspect URLs from each market and confirm Google can fetch them, and check that each market's pages are being indexed.

How should I handle translation?

Shopify's Translate & Adapt app, or a third-party translation app, manages translated content per language. For SEO, translate more than the visible body text:

SEO titles and meta descriptions, not only page content. URL handles, so German pages can use German words in the URL. Image alt text. Navigation and collection names. Structured data text such as FAQ answers, which should match the visible translated content.

Machine translation is a reasonable starting point, but review it before publishing, especially titles, collection pages and anything with sizing or legal wording. Keyword research also differs by market: people in Germany may search with a different term than a direct translation of your English keyword. Research each market's actual phrasing before translating your most important pages.

International SEO checklist for Shopify

Check Pass condition
Structure Subfolders or domains assigned to each market inside Shopify Markets
Hreflang One tag per version on key templates, plus x-default, no duplicates
Redirects No forced IP redirects, or redirects tested for crawlability
Same-language markets Prices, spelling, shipping and sizing localized
Translation Titles, meta, handles, alt text and navigation translated and reviewed
Sitemaps and indexing Each market's pages appearing in Search Console
Search Console Performance filtered by country to track each market separately

How do I measure each market's performance?

In Search Console, filter the Performance report by country and by page path, for example pages containing /en-gb/, to see each market's clicks and rankings. In GA4, compare sessions and revenue by country, and in Shopify, check sales by market. Expect a new market to take several months to build visibility, even with the authority of the main domain behind it.

International setups also affect other parts of SEO. Collection pages in each market need the same care as your main collections, covered in the collection page SEO guide, and translated structured data should follow the same rules as your main markup, covered in structured data without a developer. If you sell into the EU, consent rules for tracking also change, see our Consent Mode v2 guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify add hreflang tags automatically?

Yes, for markets and languages set up in Shopify Markets with their own subfolders or domains. Shopify outputs hreflang alternate links for each version plus an x-default. Separate Shopify stores for different countries do not get hreflang between them automatically.

Are subfolders or country domains better for Shopify international SEO?

Subfolders are the best default for most stores, because every market shares the main domain's authority and setup is simpler. Country domains give a stronger local signal but build authority separately, so they suit brands that already own established local domains.

Will US and UK English versions be treated as duplicate content?

Not when hreflang is in place, because it tells search engines which version targets which region. To rank well in each market, localize prices, spelling, shipping details and sizing rather than only changing the currency.

Should my Shopify store redirect visitors by country automatically?

Forced IP-based redirects can stop Google from crawling other market versions, since Googlebot mostly crawls from the US. A suggestion banner or country selector is safer. If you use automatic redirection, confirm in Search Console that every market's pages can be fetched and indexed.

Should I translate URL handles on Shopify?

Yes, where you run language versions. Translated handles, titles, meta descriptions and alt text help each language version match local searches. Review machine translations of important pages before publishing.
