Fashion SEO on Shopify is shaped by three things generic advice ignores: products that come in many colors and sizes, collections that change every season, and styles that sell out and never return. Stores that rank decide deliberately when a color deserves its own page, keep seasonal collection URLs evergreen instead of creating a new one each year, handle sold-out and discontinued styles without losing their authority, and write product titles that describe the garment rather than only naming it. Add size and fit content that answers buyers' biggest doubt, and occasion collections that match how people actually shop for clothes.
Should each color be a separate product or a variant?

This is the most debated fashion SEO question on Shopify, and the honest answer is: it depends on whether color is searched.
| Colors as variants | Colors as separate products | |
|---|---|---|
| URLs | One URL per style | One URL per color |
| Reviews | All in one place | Split across colors unless your review app groups them |
| Ranking for "[color] + [item]" | Weaker, the page title names one style | Stronger, each page can target its color |
| Collection grids | One tile per style | One tile per color, fuller grids |
| Management | Simpler | More products to maintain |
Default to variants. Most color variations are not searched on their own, and keeping one URL concentrates reviews and authority.
Split into separate products when a color is searched on its own ("red satin midi dress", "black linen trousers"), each color has its own photography, and stock is deep enough that the page will not sit sold out. Link the colors together with swatches on each product page, using metafields or your theme's swatch feature, so buyers can switch between them. On Shopify Plus, the Combined Listings app can group separate color products into one listing on the storefront.
How should product titles be written for fashion?
Named styles are part of fashion branding, but a name alone ranks for nothing:
Weak: "The Ava"
Strong: "Ava Linen Midi Dress, Sage"
Include garment type, key fabric or feature, and color where it helps. In the description, cover fabric composition, fit (relaxed, slim, true to size), length, neckline or rise, care, and model measurements with the size they wear.
How should seasonal collections be handled?

Create seasonal collections once, with evergreen URLs, and refresh them each year:
Use /collections/summer-dresses
Not /collections/summer-2026-drop
An evergreen URL accumulates rankings and links year after year. A dated one starts from zero every season and leaves dead pages behind. Update the products, the banner and the copy each season, but keep the URL.
For limited drops that genuinely are one-offs, keep the drop page live after it ends and point it to the relevant evergreen collection, rather than deleting it.
What should I do with sold-out sizes and discontinued styles?
Sold-out sizes: keep the product live, show which sizes are available, and offer back-in-stock alerts for sold-out sizes.
Sold-out styles that will return: keep the page live with availability set correctly, a restock alert and links to similar styles.
Discontinued styles: if the page has traffic or links, keep it for a while with clear "no longer available" messaging and strong links to similar products. Once traffic fades, redirect it to the closest relevant collection, never to the homepage. Set this as a written rule for your team so it happens consistently every season.
Why do size and fit content matter for SEO?
Fit is the biggest doubt in online fashion buying and the biggest driver of returns. Content that answers it helps buyers, reduces returns, and ranks:
Size guides per category, as text and tables, not only as an image. Fit notes on every product page. Model information: height and size worn. Reviews with fit data, such as "runs small" or "true to size", which most review apps support. International size conversion if you sell across markets, since US, UK and EU sizes differ. Our international SEO guide covers selling into multiple countries.
How should fashion stores handle filters?
Fashion collections carry many filters: color, size, fabric, length, fit, price. Filter URLs should not be indexed. When a combination has real search demand, such as "black linen trousers" or "plus size wedding guest dresses", build it as its own collection with its own copy. Our collection page SEO guide explains how.
What about images?
Fashion shoppers search visually, and Google Images and Shopping are real traffic sources. Show every product from several angles, on-model and flat, with a close-up of fabric. Write alt text the way someone would search the item ("sage linen midi dress with square neckline, front view"). Name files descriptively before upload. Compress images and serve modern formats, because image-heavy pages are often the slowest on a fashion store. Our store speed guide covers this.
What content should a fashion brand publish?
| Content type | Example |
|---|---|
| Occasion guides | "What to wear to a summer wedding", "Office outfits for hot weather" |
| Fabric guides | "Linen vs cotton", "How to care for silk" |
| Fit and styling guides | "How a midi dress should fit", "Styling wide-leg trousers" |
| Seasonal edits | Refreshed each season on an evergreen URL |
| Size guides | One per category, text-based and detailed |
Pair occasion content with matching occasion collections, such as wedding guest dresses or vacation outfits. These collections target high-intent searches that category collections miss.

Frequently asked questions
Should clothing colors be separate products or variants on Shopify?
Default to variants, which keep reviews and authority on one URL. Split a color into its own product when it is searched on its own, has its own photography and has enough stock, and link colors together with swatches.
How should seasonal collections be named for SEO?
Use evergreen URLs such as /collections/summer-dresses and refresh the products and copy each season. Dated URLs like summer-2026 start from zero every year and leave dead pages behind.
What should I do with discontinued clothing products?
If the page has traffic or links, keep it live for a while with clear messaging and links to similar products. Once traffic fades, redirect it to the most relevant collection, not the homepage.
Do size guides help SEO?
Yes. Size and fit questions are searched constantly, and text-based size guides, fit notes and model measurements answer them, which helps rankings, AI citations and conversion while reducing returns.
Should filtered collection pages be indexed on a fashion store?
No. Filter URLs lack unique titles and copy. When a filter combination has real search demand, build it as its own collection with unique copy instead.
