How he got here
A product business first, an agency second.
Ritik's first business was in jewellery, not marketing. That is where the interest in ecommerce came from, and where he learned the parts of the job that do not show up in an agency's portfolio: what stock sitting unsold actually costs you, why a returns rate matters more than a conversion rate, and how quickly a bad month feels personal when it is your own money.
He started 7SEA in August 2020, building Shopify stores for Indian D2C brands who had outgrown a marketplace listing. The clients kept asking for more than a build, so the agency grew into ads, SEO and email one hire at a time, and only when the work was already there to justify it.
Six years on, most of the client base is outside India and the team is split between New Delhi and Los Angeles. He is still in the same threads as the designers and developers, and still writes the scopes himself.
Day to day
What he actually spends time on.
A founder page that says "visionary leader" tells you nothing. This is the real breakdown of where the week goes.
Scoping and quoting
Every proposal that leaves 7SEA is written or reviewed by him. It is the part of the business where a wrong number costs the most, so it has never been delegated.
Client calls
First calls, quarterly reviews and anything that has gone sideways. If you enquire, you are speaking to him before you speak to anyone else.
Building
Still in the theme code most weeks, and building 7SEA's own Shopify apps. He does not think you can price development work you have stopped doing.
Positions
Four things he has changed his mind about.
Six years of being wrong about things in public. These are the ones that changed how the agency works.
Charging hourly was the fair way to do it, because you only bill for the time you actually spend.
Hourly billing punishes clients for our estimation mistakes and rewards us for being slow. Fixed price forces us to scope properly, which is the harder and better discipline.
Taking every project that came in was how a young agency grows.
A bad-fit project costs more than the revenue it brings, in team morale and in the good work it crowds out. Saying no on the first call is a service to both sides.
More apps meant more capability, and installing them was the fast way to give clients features.
Every app is a script on every page load. Most of what clients ask for belongs in the theme, and the speed cost of the shortcut usually exceeds what the feature earns.
Reporting platform ROAS was the honest way to show clients what their ads were doing.
Platform-reported numbers double count and flatter themselves. Blended metrics against Shopify revenue are less impressive on a slide and far more useful for making decisions.
Side projects
Building for the platform, not just on it.
Tools that started as something a client needed and turned into products. Building them is also how the team stays current with what Shopify actually allows.
7SEA WebP Converter
Bulk image conversion for Shopify stores, built after doing it manually one time too many.
