Shopify Additional Scripts Stopped Working? Rebuild Tracking with Custom Pixels (2026)

Rebuilding Shopify conversion tracking with custom pixels after Additional Scripts were removed

Last updated: September 25, 2026

On August 26, 2026, Shopify upgraded the Thank you and Order status pages of every non-Plus store that had not upgraded itself, and everything in the Additional Scripts box stopped running. If your Google Ads conversion tag, Meta pixel, TikTok pixel or affiliate tracking lived in that box, those conversions stopped reporting on the day your pages were upgraded. The replacement is Shopify's Customer events system: app pixels from the official channel apps for the major platforms, and custom pixels for everything else. Rebuilding usually takes a few hours. The bigger risk is the data you lose while nobody notices.

This guide shows you how to confirm what broke, rebuild each script in the right place, test it, and limit the damage to your ad campaigns.

What exactly changed on August 26, 2026?

Shopify has been retiring the old ways of customizing checkout for several years. The last step covered the Thank you and Order status pages, the pages customers see after paying, where most post-purchase tracking used to live.

For stores on non-Plus plans (Basic, Shopify, Advanced), August 26, 2026 was the deadline to upgrade those pages. Stores that had not upgraded were moved to the new pages automatically, and the upgrade removed customizations built on Additional Scripts, checkout.liquid and apps that injected script tags. Stores on the Pause and Build plan were upgraded automatically as well.

Shopify Plus stores went through this earlier. Script-based customizations on these pages were sunset for Plus on August 28, 2025, and Shopify began auto-upgrading remaining Plus stores in January 2026.

One more point that matters now: reverting to the old pages was only possible before the deadline, and only under narrow conditions. That option is gone. The only way forward is rebuilding on the new system.

How do I know if my tracking broke?

Check three places, comparing the weeks before and after your upgrade date:

Google Ads. Go to Goals > Conversions. A purchase action that dropped to zero or near zero, or shows "No recent conversions", is the clearest sign.

Meta Events Manager. Look at the Purchase event. If PageView and AddToCart keep flowing while Purchase falls off, your purchase pixel lived in Additional Scripts.

Affiliate and partner dashboards. Affiliate networks, influencer platforms and review apps that tracked sales through a thank-you page script will show a drop in attributed orders.

If Shopify orders held steady while platform-reported purchases fell sharply from one date, you have found your problem.

Step 1: List what your old scripts did

Map of old Additional Scripts tags and where each one moves under Customer events

If you or your developer kept a copy of the old Additional Scripts content, start there. If not, rebuild the list from your ad accounts, your partner platforms and your installed apps. Then map each item to its new home:

Old script New home
Google Ads conversion tag Google & YouTube app, or a custom pixel if you need a separate conversion action
GA4 purchase tag Google & YouTube app (purchase is now also sent server to server)
Meta pixel purchase event Facebook & Instagram app, ideally with Conversions API
TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat pixels Each platform's official Shopify app
Affiliate or partner postback The partner's Shopify app pixel, or a custom pixel
Post-purchase survey, upsell or custom message Checkout editor blocks or a checkout extensibility app
Custom data layer for GTM Custom pixel pushing events into GTM, or server-side tagging

For GA4 specifically, note that since July 2026 the Google & YouTube app also sends the purchase event from Shopify's servers. Our guide on GA4 and Shopify discrepancies explains what that fixes and what it does not.

Step 2: Use app pixels first

For every platform with an official Shopify app, use it before writing any code. App pixels are maintained by the platform, respect your customer privacy settings, and update when Shopify changes things. The Facebook & Instagram app can also send purchases through the Conversions API, which a browser-only script never did. Setup details are in our Meta CAPI guide.

Install the app, connect the ad account, confirm the pixel shows as connected under Settings > Customer events, and move on. Keep custom code for what apps do not cover.

Step 3: Build a custom pixel for everything else

Steps to add a custom pixel in Shopify Settings under Customer events

Go to Settings > Customer events > Add custom pixel. Name it clearly, set its customer privacy permission (usually marketing for ad platforms), paste your code, save, and click Connect.

Custom pixels do not work like the old scripts. They run in a sandbox, cannot read or change the page, and receive data by subscribing to Shopify's standard events. The purchase event is checkout_completed.

Here is an example that sends a Google Ads conversion from a custom pixel. Only use this if you are not already tracking the same conversion action through the Google & YouTube app, or you will count every order twice.

// Load the Google tag inside the pixel sandbox
const script = document.createElement('script');
script.src = 'https://www.googletagmanager.com/gtag/js?id=AW-XXXXXXXXX';
script.async = true;
document.head.appendChild(script);

window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
function gtag() { dataLayer.push(arguments); }
gtag('js', new Date());
gtag('config', 'AW-XXXXXXXXX');

// Fire the conversion when checkout completes
analytics.subscribe('checkout_completed', (event) => {
  const checkout = event.data.checkout;
  gtag('event', 'conversion', {
    send_to: 'AW-XXXXXXXXX/CONVERSION_LABEL',
    value: checkout.totalPrice.amount,
    currency: checkout.currencyCode,
    transaction_id: checkout.order.id
  });
});

Replace the ID and conversion label with your own from Google Ads. The transaction_id lets Google deduplicate if the event fires twice. The same pattern works for affiliate postbacks: subscribe to checkout_completed, read the order ID and total, and send them to the partner's endpoint as their documentation describes.

If you run a Google Tag Manager setup, you can load GTM inside a custom pixel and push Shopify's events into the data layer, but debugging is harder in the sandbox. For stores with several platforms, server-side tagging is usually the cleaner long-term setup, covered in our server-side GTM guide.

Step 4: Test before you trust it

1. Place a real test order, using a 100 percent discount code or a low-priced test product. 2. In Google Ads, check the conversion action's diagnostics over the next few hours, or use Tag Assistant during the test. 3. In Meta Events Manager, use Test Events and confirm one Purchase with the right value. 4. In GA4, watch DebugView or Realtime. 5. For each platform, confirm exactly one purchase per order. Two means duplicate tracking, usually an app pixel and a custom pixel both firing.

Remember that customer privacy settings apply. If you test from a region where your consent banner requires opt-in, accept marketing cookies first, or events will not fire.

Step 5: Protect your campaigns from the broken period

Smart Bidding learned from the days your tracking was broken, and it learned the wrong lesson: that your ads stopped converting. Two actions limit the damage:

Google Ads data exclusions. In the bid strategies area of Google Ads, create a data exclusion covering the dates tracking was down. Smart Bidding will ignore conversion data from that window instead of treating it as a real performance drop. This works for recent outages, so apply it as soon as you know the dates.

Do not judge performance on the broken window. Reported ROAS for those weeks is wrong. Pause any decisions based on it, including budget cuts and target changes made while conversions looked low.

Meta has no equivalent of data exclusions, so the priority there is getting Purchase events flowing again, with the Conversions API, so the algorithm recovers quickly.

Lost browser conversions from the gap cannot be recreated in most platforms. If your team happened to store click IDs with orders, an offline conversion import in Google Ads can recover part of that data. For most stores, the realistic goal is to stop the loss and move on.

What if I am on Shopify Plus?

Plus stores went through the same change in 2025, and remaining stores were auto-upgraded from January 2026. If you are on Plus and your tracking still looks off, the same five steps apply. Plus stores also have more options through checkout UI extensions for any content that used to live on the Thank you page.

Need help rebuilding?

Most stores can rebuild the main platforms in an afternoon with the steps above. It gets harder when several affiliate partners, a custom GTM setup and consent rules all interact, or when you are not sure which conversions are counting twice. Tracking audits and rebuilds are part of 7SEA Marketing's analytics service for D2C Shopify brands.

Frequently asked questions

Do Shopify Additional Scripts still work?

No. For non-Plus stores, Additional Scripts on the Thank you and Order status pages stopped running when the pages were upgraded, with August 26, 2026 as the final deadline. For Shopify Plus stores, script-based customizations on those pages were sunset on August 28, 2025.

What replaced Additional Scripts in Shopify?

Customer events. Tracking now runs through app pixels, installed by the official channel apps like Google & YouTube and Facebook & Instagram, and custom pixels you add under Settings > Customer events. Page content moved to checkout editor blocks and checkout extensibility apps.

Can I revert to the old Shopify Thank you page?

Not anymore. Reverting was only possible before the August 26, 2026 deadline and under limited conditions. Stores now need to rebuild their customizations with pixels and blocks.

Can a Shopify custom pixel read the Thank you page?

No. Custom pixels run in a sandbox and cannot access or change the page. They receive data by subscribing to Shopify's standard events, such as checkout_completed for purchases, which includes the order ID, totals and line items.

How do I stop Google Ads Smart Bidding from learning from broken tracking?

Create a data exclusion in Google Ads covering the dates your conversion tracking was down. Smart Bidding then ignores conversion data from that period instead of treating it as a real drop in performance.
