How to Get Shopify Products Recommended in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode (2026)

Shopify Agentic Storefronts guide for ChatGPT and Google AI Mode product recommendations

Last updated: october 17, 2026

Since March 2026, Shopify has been syndicating merchants' products into AI shopping experiences through a feature called Agentic Storefronts. Eligible stores are activated automatically, with no app to install and no extra fees from Shopify, and their products flow through Shopify Catalog to channels including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. Being included is mostly automatic. Being recommended is not. AI assistants choose products based on how well your product data answers the shopper's question, so the work that decides visibility is product data quality, accurate policies, and not blocking the crawlers these systems use.

This guide covers how it works, who is eligible, where to manage it, and what to improve.

How do Agentic Storefronts work?

How Shopify Catalog feeds products into ChatGPT, Copilot, AI Mode and Gemini

Shopify Catalog is a structured index of products from Shopify merchants, with titles, descriptions, images, prices, inventory and shipping standardized so AI systems can read them reliably. When a shopper asks an AI assistant something like "a waterproof hiking jacket under $200 that ships to Chicago", the assistant can query that catalog alongside its other sources and recommend matching products.

Checkout works differently by channel. In ChatGPT, the buyer completes the purchase on your own store's checkout through an in-app browser. For Copilot, AI Mode and Gemini, merchants can choose per channel whether buyers can check out directly inside the AI interface or are sent to the online store.

Who is eligible?

Channel Eligibility (per Shopify) Checkout
ChatGPT Merchants in Shopify Catalog selling to US buyers, regardless of store location On your store, via in-app browser
Microsoft Copilot Merchants in Shopify Catalog selling to US buyers, regardless of store location Direct checkout can be turned on or off
AI Mode in Google Search Select US-based shops selling to US buyers Direct checkout can be turned on or off
Gemini app Select US-based shops selling to US buyers Direct checkout can be turned on or off

Eligibility is changing quickly, so check the current rules in your admin. For stores outside the US, the ChatGPT and Copilot channels are open to you if you sell to US buyers.

Where do I manage it?

AI channel settings live in the agentic section of your Shopify admin. From there you can see which AI channels are active, choose which AI partners receive your product data or let Shopify distribute to current and future channels automatically, set direct checkout options where available, and control whether order data is shared with ChatGPT.

Review it once now, and again whenever Shopify adds channels. Default settings are designed to include you broadly, which suits most stores, but you should know what is switched on.

What decides whether my products get recommended?

Thin product data compared with AI-ready product data that answers shopper questions

AI assistants answer specific questions. A product with complete, specific data can match far more questions than one with a two-word title and a paragraph of brand story. Work through these in order:

1. Descriptive titles. Product type, key attributes and variant details: "Men's Waterproof Hiking Jacket, 3-Layer Shell, Recycled Nylon" rather than "The Summit".

2. Descriptions that answer questions. Materials, dimensions, fit, compatibility, use cases, care, what is included. Write the facts a shopper would ask an assistant about, in plain language.

3. Product category and attributes. Assign each product its category in Shopify's standard product taxonomy and fill the category attributes Shopify offers, such as color, material or size. Structured attributes are easier for AI systems to match than prose.

4. Complete variants and identifiers. Accurate options, SKUs and barcodes where they exist.

5. Images. Clear product images on neutral backgrounds plus lifestyle shots, with descriptive alt text.

6. Accurate price, stock and shipping. Assistants often filter by budget and delivery location. Wrong shipping settings can exclude you from answers.

7. Clear policies. Set up shipping and return policies properly under Settings > Policies. Assistants answer questions like "does this store accept returns" from that data.

8. Visible listing status. Products set to unlisted are hidden from AI channels as well as from search engines and sitemaps. Check that products you want recommended are fully visible.

Does my robots.txt matter?

Yes, for the wider AI visibility picture. Agentic Storefronts uses Shopify Catalog, but assistants also browse the web to answer questions, cite pages and read reviews. Check yourstore.com/robots.txt and make sure you are not blocking the retrieval crawlers that power live answers, such as OpenAI's search crawler and Perplexity's crawler. You can choose separately whether to allow crawlers used for model training. Google's AI Mode relies on Google's normal crawling, so standard SEO health applies there too.

How does this relate to SEO and answer engine optimization?

Agentic Storefronts covers the product side. The content side, getting your brand and pages cited when assistants answer broader questions, is answer engine optimization, which we cover in our answer engine optimization guide. The two reinforce each other: strong product data helps you get recommended, and strong content and third-party mentions help the assistant trust your brand.

Structured data on your own product pages still matters for Google and for assistants that read your site directly. Our guide to structured data without a developer covers it.

How do I measure AI channel performance?

In Shopify, check whether orders from AI channels appear in your sales reports by channel, and use any performance insights the agentic section provides.

In GA4, create a segment or channel group for AI referrers such as chatgpt.com, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com and perplexity.ai. Links from ChatGPT often carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, which makes them easy to spot.

Expect citations to outnumber clicks. AI answers often resolve the question without a click. On our own site, Microsoft Clarity shows AI engines citing our pages far more often than they send visitors. Measure visibility, not only traffic.

What is still uncertain?

This is a young channel. How assistants rank products is not published, fees and eligibility vary by channel and are changing, and reporting is still limited. Treat third-party claims about exact ranking factors or fees with caution unless they come from Shopify or the AI platform directly. The safe strategy does not depend on those details: complete, accurate product data helps in every AI channel and in regular search.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my Shopify products into ChatGPT?

Through Shopify's Agentic Storefronts, which activates automatically for eligible merchants and syndicates products through Shopify Catalog. For ChatGPT, merchants in Shopify Catalog selling to US buyers are eligible regardless of store location. Review your settings in the agentic section of the Shopify admin.

Does Shopify charge extra for Agentic Storefronts?

Shopify describes Agentic Storefronts as having no apps to install and no additional fees from Shopify. Individual AI channels may have their own terms, so check each channel's details in your admin.

Can Shopify stores outside the US sell through ChatGPT?

Yes, if they sell to US buyers. Shopify states the ChatGPT and Copilot channels are open to merchants in Shopify Catalog selling to US buyers, regardless of where the store is located. AI Mode and Gemini are limited to select US-based shops.

How do I get my products recommended by AI assistants?

Improve product data: descriptive titles, descriptions that answer real questions, product categories and attributes, complete variants and identifiers, clear images, accurate prices and shipping, and clear policies. Also make sure your robots.txt does not block AI retrieval crawlers.

How can I track sales from ChatGPT and other AI tools?

Check sales by channel in Shopify, and in GA4 create a segment for AI referrers such as chatgpt.com, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com and perplexity.ai. Links from ChatGPT often include utm_source=chatgpt.com.
