A Magento to Shopify migration keeps its rankings when three things happen: every old URL with traffic or links redirects to its closest new equivalent, content and metadata move across intact, and someone watches Search Console closely for 90 days after launch. The redirect work is bigger than on most migrations, because Shopify uses a fixed URL structure. Products live under /products/, categories under /collections/, content pages under /pages/ and blog posts under /blogs/. Almost no Magento URL survives unchanged, so almost every valuable URL needs a mapped redirect.
This checklist covers the work in order: before, during and after the move.
Phase 1: Inventory every URL that matters
Build one master list of old URLs from four sources, because each catches pages the others miss:
1. A full crawl of the live Magento site with a crawler such as Screaming Frog. 2. Search Console, all pages with impressions over the last 12 months. 3. Analytics landing pages over the last 12 months. 4. Backlink data from a tool such as Ahrefs or Semrush, listing every URL other sites link to.
For each URL, record traffic, backlinks, title, meta description, H1 and word count. Sort by value. The top few hundred URLs are where most of your organic revenue lives, and they deserve individual attention.
Phase 2: Map old URLs to new ones

| Magento URL type | Example | Shopify equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Product | /linen-shirt-blue.html | /products/linen-shirt-blue |
| Product with category path | /men/shirts/linen-shirt-blue.html | /products/linen-shirt-blue |
| Category | /men/shirts.html | /collections/mens-shirts |
| CMS page | /about-us | /pages/about-us |
| Blog post (extension) | /blog/post-name | /blogs/news/post-name |
| Layered navigation | /men/shirts.html with filter parameters | Usually no individual redirect needed |
| Store views (languages) | /de/..., /fr/... | Shopify Markets subfolders |
Mapping rules:
Redirect each old URL to the most relevant new page, not the homepage. A redirect to an unrelated page is often treated like a dead page.
Keep product and collection handles as close as possible to the old slugs, minus the .html suffix. It makes mapping simpler and keeps URLs familiar.
For discontinued products, redirect to the closest collection or replacement product.
Avoid chains. If older Magento redirects already exist, point the original URLs straight to the final Shopify URL.
The full sheet structure and CSV format are in our redirect map template.
Phase 3: Load redirects into Shopify
In Shopify admin, go to the URL redirects area under Online Store > Navigation and import a CSV with two columns: the old path and the new path. A few Shopify-specific points:
Redirects only fire when the old path does not exist on Shopify. Since Magento and Shopify paths rarely collide, this is usually fine, but check that no live Shopify page sits at an old URL you meant to redirect.
Use paths, not full URLs, for the source column, and test a sample of redirects after import.
Parameter URLs from layered navigation rarely need individual redirects. Focus on URLs with real traffic or backlinks.
Phase 4: Migrate content and metadata, not just products
Product and category descriptions in full, including any content Magento stored in custom attributes or blocks. SEO titles and meta descriptions into Shopify's search engine listing fields. Image alt text. Reviews, imported into your review app so the product pages keep their social proof and rating markup. Blog posts, with their images and internal links updated to new URLs. Internal links inside content, rewritten to Shopify URLs rather than relying on redirects.
Configurable products: Magento configurable products usually become Shopify products with variants. Check Shopify's current variant and option limits against your largest configurables before migrating, and plan how option names map.
Store views: if your Magento store ran multiple languages or countries, rebuild them with Shopify Markets and translations so hreflang is generated. Our international SEO guide covers the setup.
Phase 5: Pre-launch checks
| Check | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Redirect test | Top 200 old URLs each return one 301 to the right new page |
| Metadata | Titles and descriptions match or improve on the old site for top pages |
| Content parity | Word counts on top pages roughly match the old versions |
| Structured data | Product, breadcrumb and review markup validates |
| Internal links | No links pointing to old Magento URLs |
| Tracking | Analytics, ad pixels and consent working on the new store |
| Speed | Core templates tested on mobile |
Phase 6: Launch day
Switch the domain during a low-traffic period. Immediately test a sample of old URLs from your master list, place a test order, and confirm tracking. Submit the new sitemap in Search Console. Keep the old Magento site and database accessible privately for a few weeks in case you need to recover content.
Phase 7: Monitor for 90 days

Daily for two weeks: Search Console page indexing for spikes in not-found errors, and crawl a list of old URLs to confirm redirects still work. Weekly after that: clicks and impressions by page type against the same period before launch, and rankings for your top 50 keywords.
A small dip in the first few weeks is normal while Google processes redirects. A drop that persists past a month points to specific pages: missing redirects, lost content, or weaker internal linking. Fix those pages directly, using the diagnosis order in our ranking drop recovery guide.
What are the most common Magento migration mistakes?
Redirecting everything to the homepage. Bulk homepage redirects throw away the relevance of every old page. Only redirecting products. Categories, CMS pages and blog posts often carry more organic traffic than individual products. Dropping category content. Magento category descriptions frequently get lost, and collection pages launch thin. Our collection page SEO guide shows how to rebuild them properly. Launching without tracking. Without working analytics you cannot see what went wrong. Stopping monitoring after week one. Problems often show up in weeks three to six.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose SEO rankings moving from Magento to Shopify?
Not if the migration is planned properly. Rankings hold when every valuable old URL redirects to its closest new equivalent, content and metadata move intact, and Search Console is monitored for 90 days. A small temporary dip while Google processes redirects is normal.
Why do all my Magento URLs change on Shopify?
Shopify uses a fixed URL structure, with products under /products/, categories under /collections/, pages under /pages/ and blog posts under /blogs/. Magento URLs, often ending in .html or including category paths, therefore change and need 301 redirects.
How do I add bulk redirects in Shopify?
Use the URL redirects area under Online Store, Navigation in the Shopify admin and import a CSV with the old path and the new path for each URL. Redirects only work when no live Shopify page exists at the old path.
Should I redirect old Magento URLs to the homepage?
No. Redirect each URL to the most relevant new page, such as the same product, the closest collection or a replacement product. Homepage redirects lose the relevance of the old page and are often treated like dead pages.
How long should I monitor SEO after a Magento to Shopify migration?
At least 90 days. Check daily for the first two weeks for errors and broken redirects, then weekly for traffic and rankings by page type, since some problems only appear several weeks after launch.
