Performance Max Reporting in 2026: See Where Your Budget Goes

Performance Max reporting and transparency guide for Shopify stores 2026

Last updated: September 25, 2026

Performance Max reporting in 2026 finally shows you where your budget actually goes. The channel performance report breaks spend and conversions down by Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and Maps, search terms reporting shows the queries that triggered your ads, and placement reports show the sites and videos your ads appeared on. Most Shopify merchants running PMax have never opened any of these three reports, which is why so many accounts quietly burn 20 to 40 percent of budget on placements that never sell anything.

This guide walks through each report, what a healthy channel mix looks like for an ecommerce account, and what to change in the campaign when the numbers are wrong. It assumes you already have a live Performance Max campaign connected to your Shopify store through the Google & YouTube app or Merchant Center. If you are still deciding how to structure the campaign itself, start with our Performance Max for Shopify guide and come back here.

Why was Performance Max a black box for so long?

When PMax launched, Google gave you one campaign-level number. You could not see how much went to Shopping versus YouTube, which search terms you paid for, or which websites showed your display ads. The campaign type asked for trust and gave back a blended ROAS.

That changed in stages. Google introduced the channel performance report in 2025 and rolled it out across accounts through late 2025, added channel-level reporting to the Google Ads API in early 2026, and announced further transparency updates in March 2026 covering budget reporting, expanded audience reporting and placement reporting segmented by network. Full search terms visibility, matching what Search campaigns get, arrived alongside these changes.

The practical effect: you can now audit a PMax campaign almost as thoroughly as a Standard Shopping plus Search setup. The controls are still limited, but the visibility is real, and visibility is where every fix starts.

How do I find the channel performance report?

Performance Max channel performance report with spend share, value share and diagnostics highlighted

In Google Ads, open the Performance Max campaign, then go to Insights and reports > Channel performance. You get a distribution view showing spend, impressions, clicks, conversions and conversion value split by channel, plus a diagnostic panel that flags issues per channel, for example disapproved products limiting Shopping or missing video assets pushing Google to auto-generate one.

Three things to check first:

1. Spend share by channel. For a Shopify store selling physical products, Shopping should dominate. Practitioner benchmarks from agencies managing large PMax portfolios put a healthy range at roughly 60 to 80 percent of spend on Shopping for ecommerce accounts. If Display and YouTube together take more than a quarter of your budget and your target is direct response, something in the campaign is feeding them.

2. Conversion value share versus spend share. A channel taking 20 percent of spend and returning 2 percent of conversion value is not "upper funnel support", it is leakage. Compare the two columns side by side.

3. The diagnostics column. This is where you find out that half your catalog is disapproved in Merchant Center, or that Google is auto-generating a video from your product images because you never uploaded one. Auto-generated videos unlock YouTube spend whether you wanted it or not.

What does a healthy channel mix look like for a Shopify store?

Healthy versus leaking Performance Max channel mix shown as two donut charts

There is no single correct split, but the table below is a reasonable sanity check for a direct response ecommerce campaign with a tROAS or tCPA goal.

Channel Healthy range (ecom, direct response) Red flag
Shopping 60 to 80% of spend Below 50% with a full, approved feed
Search 10 to 25% Mostly brand terms (check search terms report)
YouTube 0 to 10% Double-digit spend with near-zero conversion value
Display 0 to 10% High spend concentrated on low-quality placements
Gmail / Discover / Maps 0 to 5% Rarely a problem at this size

If your mix is way off, do not panic-pause the campaign. The fixes below shift the mix without resetting learning.

How do I read the Performance Max search terms report?

Open the campaign, then Insights and reports > Search terms. As of 2026 this shows the actual queries, not just aggregated "search themes", with impressions, clicks, conversions and value per term.

What to look for:

Brand cannibalization. Sort by conversions. If your own brand name and product names dominate the top of the list, PMax is claiming conversions you would have won anyway through organic or a cheap branded Search campaign. The blended ROAS looks great and means little. The fix is a brand exclusion, which we cover in detail in the brand exclusions guide.

Irrelevant query clusters. Look for terms like "free", "DIY", "how to make", job-related queries, or competitor brands you cannot legally sell. Add these as negative keywords. Account-level negative keywords apply to PMax, and campaign-level negatives for PMax rolled out to all accounts in 2025, so you no longer need to file a support ticket to get negatives applied.

Search category gaps. Queries with high impressions and no clicks usually mean your feed titles do not match how people search. That is a Merchant Center fix, not a campaign fix: put the search phrasing (material, use case, size) at the front of product titles.

How do I see which websites and videos my ads showed on?

Placement reporting for PMax lives under Reports > Predefined reports > Other > Performance Max campaigns placement. Historically it showed impressions only, which made it easy to ignore. The 2026 updates segment placements by network and give you more usable data.

Scan the list for mobile app placements, made-for-kids YouTube channels, and low-quality content farms. You cannot exclude placements inside the PMax campaign directly, but you can add account-level placement exclusions under Tools > Content suitability, and those apply to PMax. Most ecommerce accounts should exclude mobile app categories wholesale unless there is evidence they convert.

What do I change when the numbers are wrong?

Match the symptom to the lever:

Symptom in reports Fix
YouTube and Display eating budget with no sales Remove or do not upload video assets, run a feed-only asset group (no images, no logos, no videos), which concentrates delivery on Shopping
Search terms full of your own brand Apply brand exclusions, move brand into a dedicated Search campaign
Junk queries converting nothing Campaign-level and account-level negative keywords
Trash placements Account-level placement exclusions and content suitability settings
Shopping share low despite a good feed Check diagnostics for disapprovals, fix feed titles, raise tROAS gradually rather than in big jumps
Only a handful of products getting all the spend Split asset groups or campaigns by margin or product tier using custom labels

Make one structural change at a time and give the campaign one to two weeks before judging. Stacking three changes in a day resets learning and makes the reports unreadable.

What can you still not see in Performance Max?

Honesty matters here. Even in 2026 you cannot see channel-level bidding controls (you cannot bid down YouTube, only starve it of assets), you cannot get a true incrementality read from the interface (brand exclusions plus geo holdout tests are the honest way to measure that), and asset-level reporting still leans on ratings like "Best" and "Good" rather than hard revenue attribution per asset. Treat PMax reporting as an audit tool, not a control panel.

One more measurement note: your Google Ads numbers will never match GA4 or Shopify exactly, because each system counts conversions differently. If that gap is bothering you, our guide on why GA4 and Shopify disagree breaks down every cause.

When is it worth bringing in an expert?

If you pull these three reports and the picture is clean, keep doing what you are doing. If Shopping share is under 50 percent, brand terms dominate the search report, and diagnostics show feed problems you do not know how to fix, that combination usually costs more per month than professional management does. 7SEA Marketing manages Google Ads and Performance Max for D2C Shopify brands in the US, UK, EU, India and Australia, and a channel-mix audit is the first thing we run on every account we take over. Frequently asked questions

Where is the channel performance report in Google Ads?

Open your Performance Max campaign, then go to Insights and reports, then Channel performance. It shows spend, clicks, conversions and conversion value split across Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Discover and Maps, plus per-channel diagnostics.

What percentage of Performance Max spend should go to Shopping for ecommerce?

For a Shopify store focused on direct response, roughly 60 to 80 percent of spend on Shopping is a healthy benchmark. A significantly lower share usually points to feed disapprovals, weak product titles, or image and video assets pulling delivery toward Display and YouTube.

Can I add negative keywords to Performance Max?

Yes. Campaign-level negative keywords are available for Performance Max in all accounts, and account-level negative keyword lists also apply to PMax. Use the search terms report to find the queries worth excluding.

Can I exclude specific websites or YouTube channels from Performance Max?

Not inside the campaign, but account-level placement exclusions and content suitability settings apply to Performance Max. Pull the Performance Max placement report, then add the worst placements at account level.

How do I stop Performance Max from spending on YouTube?

You cannot bid down a channel directly. The working method is to withhold the assets that unlock it: run a feed-only asset group with no videos and no images, and PMax concentrates delivery on Shopping placements. If Google auto-generates a video from your images, that alone can open YouTube delivery, so check the asset group.
